  • Descendant Tree of John Ralph (ca 1787-1856)

  • John Ralph & Hannah Bennett in Suffolk

John Ralph was born in Leiston, Suffolk around 1787. In 1793, his wife, Hannah Bennett, was born in Benhall where they married in 1816. We haven't been able to trace their ancestors any further.

John Ralph's son George (gamekeeper, labourer and carpenter) married Grace Whigham Chalmers in Hunstanton in 1850. They had three children (in Hunstanton, Heveningham and 'Suffolk') before George had a child, Eliza Baker, in 1854 by Caroline Baker in Halesworth. George then had three more children with his wife (in Chediston, Walpole and St Pancras). Caroline married Samuel Hillin(g) in 1859. They had no children. Caroline died in 1871 and Samuel re-married in 1873.

Eliza Baker Norman (before marriage, Eliza Baker aka Eliza Baker Ralph, 1854-1925)

Eliza's birth was registered under the name Baker in Chediston Street, Halesworth in 1854 with no mention of a father. In the 1861 census it seems she appears in two places at once as - Eliza Baker born Halesworth, Suffolk aged 6 with her mother & Samuel Hiling in Battersea, and also with her father George Ralph as Eliza Ralph aged 3 born Lowestoft, Suffolk. In the 1871 census (before her mother has died) she appears just once as Eliza B Ralph aged 14 born Suffolk with her father and her stepmother and the rest of their children. Samuel & Caroline Hilling are then living alone. The age discrepancy (3 vs 6) for the two Elizas in the 1861 census might question our assertion that they are one and the same child, but our view is further supported by the lack of a birth registration for an Eliza Baker in Suffolk between 1854 and 1858.

In 1878 Eliza marries William Norman calling herself Eliza Baker Ralph and giving her father as George Ralph, labourer
